Another journalist got wind of the issue and had the reasonable reaction: Pay Your Interns, You Cheap #@$#%*.

I too am gaining many things through my job–experience, exposure, cup after cup of piping hot water for my green tea. But I am also delivering a product that my company sells, and you bet your boots I expect compensation for my services. I fail to see how this is any different for an intern.

Exactly! How is it different? People who justify that interns don’t deserve a salary because they are getting experience and access to a bathroom fail to realize that their logic applies to any job. An employee who contributes to a company deserves a salary and calling him an “intern” certainly doesn’t void that requirement.
